My name is Lisa Solonynko and I am the Founder of Cookery Nation and a recipe contributor.
Just like everyone, I have worn many hats over the years. I spent many wonderfully creative years as a professional photographer, a teacher, a wife and a mom.
Then I hit a serious bump in the road. In 2013 I was diagnosed with celiac disease. After the shock wore off I tapped into my “inner rebel” and decided that this was not going to force me to live on salad alone.
Along the way I came to recognize that not only were my previous dietary choices atrocious, but I was a terrible cook! Ok, that’s a bit harsh. I wasn’t so much a terrible cook as an uneducated cook. This certainly explained why cooking was such a daunting unpleasant chore for so many years.
I dug in my heels and was determined to make cooking and eating positive and pleasurable. After all, this is something I need to do multiple times a day, 7 days a week.
One of the biggest things I discovered was that I was not alone in my culinary naivete. So many people simply don’t understand the fundamentals of cooking. Not only that, it was very difficult starting back at square one and finding resources to help me.
This planted the seed for Cookery Nation.
In my discovery, my culinary loves have grown and changed. My current food and cooking ones are:
- Cooking with real food (butter, cream, honey, fresh herbs and spices), in moderation of course.
- Experimenting with different flavour profiles (masala, curry, etc.).
- Using tools like pressure cookers. Who knew they actually aren’t that scary?
- Cooking from scratch. I love creating what I previously assumed could only be bought in a box.
I am excited about discovering new things and finding new food passions.
